Posted on: 6:34 pm, May 10, 2012, by Daniel Hight, updated on: 06:35pm, May 10, 2012

(Memphis) Students gathered at the front gate of Benjamin Hooks Job Corps Center in Whitehaven. They protested an ongoing problem there; bed bugs.

Im not going to say Job Corps is a bad place, but we want our voices to be heard, said Latoya Daniels who is a student there.

But our conversation was cut short when center directors came out to break up the students gathering.

I was able to see one student had bites all over his arms. Latoya Daniels stuck around and talked to me after everyone else left. She says not enough is being done to get rid of the bed bugs. When she came to center three weeks ago, she was warned by staff.

They told me to bring my own sheets, they were infested with bed bug, said Daniels. I always thought bedbugs were a myth until I got here to Job Corps and then I got bit and people had them in a bag and were showing them around.

Directors of the center say theyre working to get rid of the problem. John Colenberg offered up a statement, The center director along with the regional office and health inspectors are working towards a process to eliminate those issues.

A different director told me off camera they sprayed chemicals as well as used heat treatments to try to get rid of the bugs but he says it has not fixed the problem. A request was made to let the students out early for their summer break so they can get rid of the bugs without putting the health of their students in danger.

I prefer not to get eaten up, Daniels said, as she laughed.

She says shes grateful for the education Job Corps is giving her, but hopes they stand by their word and get the bed bugs out.

Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite. The well-known nursery rhyme is more of a reality than you might think or hope. On Thursday the Sioux Falls Health Department held a bed bug panel to raise awareness about the pests.

If your skin isn’t crawling yet it will be soon. You also may want to double check your bed sheets tonight. Bed bugs are on the rise across the country, South Dakota is no exception.

“We have seen a steady increase of bed bug samples being sent in to our clinic.” Said Buyung Hadi, an entomologist with SDSU.

In the pastfour months theSDSU entomology clinic has identifiedfive bed bug samples. A yearly total of three is considered abnormally high.

“Our message today would be for tenants to talk with landlords, heyI got a problem here can you take a look.” Said Kevin Smith, director of building services for Sioux Falls.

Afew Sioux Falls hotels and apartments have seen bed bug cases and the city health department wants people to be aware.

Tim Nicolai was just one of the landlord’s who stopped by for more information on the pests.

“The main reasonI came down today is to see what our next step is in controlling the issue we have before it gets out of hand in Sioux Falls.” Said Nicolai.

The health department says the first step is finding them.

“The bed bugs themselves will congregate in areas close to their host, which is mainly a bed, you’re stationary, not moving, you’re easy to get to and they have nice little corners and tucks in your mattress where they can hide.” Saidhealth program director Denise Patton.

A couple from Nashville, Tennessee is suing an OFallon hotel for more than $250,000 following an alleged infestation of bed bugs during their stay. The hotels attorneys are fighting to dismiss the case and the hotel manager says bed bugs are not a problem.

Antwaine and Woodrow Ross allege the Days Inn OFallon hotel knew the critters Cinex lectularius, commonly known as bed bugs due to their tendency to be found in bedding, infested their rooms. The suit claims hotel employees did not warn guests of the bugs before they stayed in the hotel from March 19, 2010 through May 21, 2010, according to court documents.

The Rosses seek more than $50,000 from each of five counts, which include claims the hotel violated the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act by concealing the infestation. Days Inn attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss four of the five counts claiming in part that the Rosses misapprehend what constitutes a nuisance and a concurrent suit to stop an alleged nuisance and they fail to show the Days Inn acted with deliberate intention to harm.

Current hotel manager David Boan said the company has a different owner since the Rosses stayed at the hotel, located at 1320 Park Plaza Drive. He said bed bugs have not been an issue since he began employment with the company in November 2011, but noted the nuisance can be commonly treated.

Bed bugs feed off the blood of sleeping humans, causing itching and bumps to their victims. The lawsuit was filed against the hotels owner group, Caseyville Hotel Investors LLC, on March 21 in St. Clair County court. The manager of the owner group is Sanjay T. Patel, according to a database hosted on the website of the Illinos Secretary of State. Patel did not respond to a request to be interviewed.

The Rosses allege the bed bugs hitched a ride in their luggage from the hotel to their home in Tennessee. The couple claims the infestation forced them to destroy clothing, furniture, bedding, a mattress, and to fumigate the home. Along with reimbursement for those alleged losses, the couple also claims the infestation caused extensive emotional distress and loss of sleep and seek compensation for medical treatment and residual scarring from the bugs.

When the couple complained to the hotel, they claim the property manager at the time and other employees confirmed some rooms in the hotel had bed bugs, according to court documents.

The Better Business Burea has rated the hotel a C+, mostly due to three allegations of bed bug-related issues since 2010. The complaints stem from stays in October 2011, November 2011, and March 2012.

In the October 2011-related complaint, representatives with Days Inn OFallon say the company takes complaints of bed bugs very seriously since it could destroy us in a very short period and point to a national epidemic of the pests in 2010.

To prevent bed bug issues, the hotel states a program was instituted in 2010 that included:

LITTLE SILVER, N.J., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — BedBug Chasers, a World Class provider of heat remediation services and manufacturer of US made bed bug heat remediation equipment is franchising its service business. The business features a low entry cost, is a 100% chemical free and Green enterprise, and will be offered through the BedBug Chaser Franchise Corporation.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120508/CG01754)

The cornerstones of this booming franchise program features exclusive access to the patented BedBug Chaser heaters, the BedBug Chasers nationwide rental fleet and training on the BedBug Chasers propriety process. The BedBug Chaser heaters have proven to show a higher ROI than other brands on the market by substantially decreasing treatment times and the ability to heat a larger square foot area per heater.

Outbreaks of bed bug infestations have been sweeping across the United States for the past 5 years in epidemic proportions. Bed bugs have gotten so out of control that the 111th Congress introduced bill H.R.2248 — Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was tasked to investigate the public health implications of bed bugs on lodging and housing. That study centered around the impacts on mental health from bed bugs, their potential for spreading infectious disease, and their contributing to other diseases such as asthma. All studies thus far have agreed that “heat” is one of, if not the safest and most effective way to kill all stages of bed bugs including nymphs and eggs. This further reinforces the time is now for a business like BedBug Chasers to franchise.

In recent times, the media has reported on stories about “super chemical resistant” bed bugs and the dangers that many chemicals pose to people who are exposed to them. BedBug Chasers has researched and developed an eco-friendly and cost effective way to put an end to these chemical resistant bed bug infestations and is making that solution available through its franchise program.

We caught up with VP of Operations Larry Smith to discuss the franchise offering, “BedBug Chasers is the only complete franchised business system to kill bed bugs on premises with 100% chemical free Green electric heat remediation. No other company has all the pieces that we have; manufacturing, proprietary equipment, continued product development and scalability through our rental network. This puts us on Top and in a position to soon be the largest bed bug killing business in the US. Our ROI and Cost per kW is such that BedBug Chasers franchisees can compete dollar for dollar with a properly done chemical treatment, which we all know does not always work. BUT our heat does, every time. BedBug Chasers will become a top rated franchise in a very short time frame because you don’t have to be an exterminator to do this. In many states there is no special license required so this is the perfect opportunity for returning Veterans, middle management caught up in downsizing or tradesman looking to become entrepreneurs!”

    About BedBug Chasers:

BedBug Chasers is a nationwide heat remediation franchised sales, service and rental company providing a 100% Green and Chemical-Free alternative to eliminating bedbugs and other insects in commercial, residential and industrial environments. Using its proprietary, state of the art electric heat technology, BedBug Chasers equipment is capable of facilitating fast, effective and inexpensive heat remediation services throughout the United States.
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) –

Despite their best efforts, some people in Cincinnati are bringing home bed bugs in some creepy and unexpected ways, FOX19 News has learned.

Over the past month, we have been talking with bed bug experts, business owners — and you — about what you’re seeing.

What may get you scratching involuntarily are the stories about the places you’d never expect to catch bed bugs.

FOX19 viewer Kevin, writing on the station’s Facebook page, says he got them after renting a moving truck.

“It’s the only place that it could have been,” he said, “as the place I moved from did not have them and my new home did not have them to start.”

We’ve heard similar stories, too. The problem is some rental companies don’t properly inspect or clean their trucks after a family has turned-in the one they rented. So if they had bed bugs they’re passed along to the next family that rents the truck.

FOX19 visited a large moving company in our area to see how their employees try to prevent carrying bed bugs from house to house. You’ll see that part of the story Wednesday night at 10 o’clock.

We’ll also meet a man who got bed bugs after hip replacement surgery. One of the medical devices he rented was infested with them. He has pictures of the bite marks to prove it.

Tune in Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. to FOX19.

    (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

Sleep Tight Pest Control, a San Francisco-based company with over 12 years of experience in bed bug control, will be holding a seminar at the Joan and Ray Kroc Center in San Francisco on June 8, 2012. This one-day seminar will be conducted through the companys newest venture, Sleep Tight Academy and offers the most up-to-date trainings and information regarding the best practices of bed bug control.

Although DDT eliminated bed bugs in the United States in the early 20th century, resistance to DDT and other traditional chemical treatments has left most pest control companies baffled as to how to handle this new epidemic. Treatments are expensive and often dont work the first time, requiring landlords and tenants to pay thousands of dollars, often with no relief.

Bed bugs are being found and fought all over the United States- in single-family homes, apartment buildings and condos, hotels and motels, retail establishments, and even schools and churches. A survey, sponsored by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), found that bedbug-related calls to exterminators have risen by 81% over the last decade and by 57% over the last five years.

Sleep Tight Academy uses seminars to educate property managers, hotel managers and staff, tenants, social service staff, and the general public about bed bugs and successful bed bug eradication. Sleep Tight Pest Control boasts a 98 percent success rate and provides a 30-day guarantee on all of their treatments.

Specializing in working with the highest-risk populations, Sleep Tight Pest Control developed their comprehensive bed bug control process based on Integrative Pest Management strategies using 12 years of experience fighting bed bugs. Sleep Tight Pest Controls bed bug abatement philosophy emphasizes prevention, active participation of all stakeholders and treatment of all items in the unit, leaving nothing to chance or human error. Sleep Tight Academy will utilize this expertise to provide InvaderSF2012 participants with a comprehensive understanding of the bed bug issue and empowering them to fight the bed bug epidemic.

Special guest speakers will include San Francisco District Supervisor Jane Kim and Department of Public Health Program Manager Karen Cohn, who will speak on recent and upcoming changes to San Franciscos bed bug regulations.

InvaderSF2012 participants will choose from eight workshops: Treatment 101, IPM Strategies, The Financial Impact, Property Management Responsibilities, Stopping the Problem Before It Starts, Bridging the Gap Between Landlord and Tenants, Be a Bed Bug Detective, and When Two Issues Collide: Hoarding and Bed Bugs.

San Diego, Los Angeles, and Honolulu can also expect a visit from Sleep Tight Academy in the next few months. Register for InvaderSF2012 now at http://www.SleepTightAcademy.com

As bed bug inspection dogs offer the most effective way of detecting bed bugs with up to a 98% accuracy rate, Magical Pest Control is now the official go-to company for bed bug inspections in the Greater Toronto Area.

TORONTO, May 1, 2012 /CNW/ – Canadian military and law enforcement agencies have been using specially trained dogs to accurately detect bombs, firearms, ammunition, narcotics, missing persons, and signs of arson. Now, dogs have become the latest weapon in the war against bed bugs.

Traditional bed bug detection methods can be very time consuming and offer less than a 35% accuracy rate for even the best trained human inspector. However, certified bed bug detection dogs such as the ones deployed by Magical offer a much faster and more accurate way to inspect for bed bugs. The average bedroom can be inspected in less than two minutes.

The first bed bug dog inspection occurred in 2006 and this more accurate and scientifically proven method of inspecting for bed bugs is now the most popular form of bed bug detection in North America. Magical Pest Control aims to once again offer its clients the best products and services available to the industry.

“Certified K-9 bed bug detection teams are a necessity to any respectable pest control company, says Alex Dayan, manager of Magical Pest Control. “The key ingredient in this procedure is ‘certification’ as not all teams out there are certified. Our dogs can check for bed bugs behind walls, base boards, in dresser drawers and under carpets without having to strip down the room or pull baseboards away from the walls. This is also the least disruptive way for our clients.”

All of Magical Pest Control dogs are 3rd party certified by the International Association of Canine Pest Inspectors (IAOCPI) and together with ongoing daily training, these dogs are very expensive resources.

“Due to our large fleet of bed bug inspection dogs, Magical Pest Control can now properly provide its clients with ongoing, real-time inspections,” continues Dayan.

“Our K-9 detection teams are capable of performing precise and efficient inspections for a great number of hotel rooms, apartments or dorm rooms per day.”

Magical Pest Control’s Bed Bug Management Division offers free bed bug consultations to residential and commercial property owners.

Theres Lance Armstrong, an icon in a sport laced with doping. Dope has been as integral a part of pro cycling as a football is to football. Armstrong wins the Tour de France seven times in a row. It is impossible to believe he wasnt doping. But, despite what seems to be perpetual investigations in France and the U.S., despite allegations of past teammates, past gofers, and past friends, no one has ever made a single doping charge stick to the seven-time champ. Indeed, just two months ago the U.S. attorney in L.A. closed a two-year investigation into Armstrong, this one dealing with doping during his tenure on the U.S. Postal Service team (19982004).

If youre Floyd Landis, this has got to be bitter, bitter news. The bastard cheat got away with it again. Armstrong, who has an estimated net worth of $125 million, gets to keep his money, trophies, endorsement deals, business interests, and fancy friends. Meantime, Floyd eats bed bugs to survive.

And to make things incredibly, impossibly worse, on the heels of Armstrongs latest victory comes news that Floyd is the target of a federal investigation. Indeed, ESPN reports that a San Diego grand jury has been hearing witnesses at the U.S. District Court on Front Street for the past year.

The feds are looking into mail- and wire-fraud charges against Landis in regards to his legal defense fund. Said fund was set up after he was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title. Authorities said he tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

The guy cant catch a break. Back in 2010, Landis wore a wire and carried a small video camera for former IRS, current FDA, super steroid investigator Jeff Novitzky, into the home of Michael Ball. Ball owned a bad-boy cycling team, Rock Racing, and wanted to put Landis on his roster. In return, Landis wears a wire into his apartment.

While wearing a wire for Novitzky, Landis was also working with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and who knows how many others in Federal Police World, ratting out past teammates and employers. And now Federal Police World turns on him, the last honest man left in professional cycling, a simple soldier trying to clean up his sport.

To recap, Landis won the 2006 Tour de France and was busted for doping. Now comes the Floyd Fairness Fund. ESPN.com reports he raised more than $1 million and that $300,000 to $400,000 came from small individual donations and merchandise sales.

Go over to YouTube and run a search on Floyd Fairness Fund. The first hit is a March 30, 2007, video of Floyd pitching his fund. The video runs 7:22 but is blacked out after the first 3:30. Now run a Google video search on Floyd Fairness Fund. That YouTube video turns up all over the web but always with the last 3:30 deleted. In fact, I couldnt find the missing 3:30 anywhere on the internet. Lucky for us, I wrote about that specific video before it was blacked out:

The part of the video that interests me are shots of him at what looks to be a restaurant. Hes standing in a makeshift holding area talking to two women. You hear him being introduced, All of you, welcome the 2006 Tour de France champion, Floyd Landis! He straightens his shoulders and walks toward bright lights and sustained applause. Landis has his, Im innocent spiel memorized, he has his foundation executive director there, he has his foundation chairman there, hes posing for pictures, hes signing autographs, hes working the room. Thats when it hits you. This is personal, hes lying to people one person at a time.

Youve got to wonder how many bike shops, shopping malls, county fairs, restaurants, neighborhood pubs, book signings, festivals, and fairs it took to raise $300,000 in small donations from people who believed in him. How many, 200? More than 200? He lied at every one of those appearances. How many media interviews did he give, 100…200? He lied during every interview.

Some landlords are asking tenants to sign contracts that place extermination responsibilities on renters, Consumer 10s Kurt Ludlow reported Friday.

Jason York and his roommates have called the northeast side Bel Air Court Apartments home for the past four years.

Theyve been fair to us, York said. Its been nice. This is really the first trouble weve ever really had of them.

York said that he and his roommates were handed a pest control addendum to sign as part of their lease renewal. The addendum required them to certify that there were no bed bugs in their apartment.

According to the addendum, the men would have to notify the landlord should bed bugs appear, cooperate with extermination efforts and pay the costs, including those for extermination in other units should bed bugs spread

They also would immediately lose their apartment and their lease would be terminated, Ludlow reported.

It just seemed draconian, York said.

Dianna Parker of the Legal Aid Society of Columbus said that many landlords are using bed bug contracts to put more responsibility on tenants to prevent bed bugs infestations and to pay for the high costs of extermination.

I think they may be more common as we notice an influx of bed bug infestations in Columbus, Parker said.

Parker said that tenants have three choices sign, negotiate changes to the agreement or move, Ludlow reported.

The rash that prompted a two-hour quarantine of a Delta plane in Chicago Thursday may have been the work of bed bugs, not the monkeypox virus health officials feared.

The itchy passenger was Lise Sievers of Red Wing, Minn., a 50-year-old woman returning home from Uganda, where she was working to adopt two children. Sievers noticed the rash and told her mother, who got worried and called health officials in Indiana.

“It’s just a case of bed bugs,” Sievers told ABC News affiliate WLS after exiting the plane. “I think I’m going to empty a jar of bed bugs on my mom’s bed tonight.”

Other passengers aboard Flight 3163 feared the worst as officers wearing Hazmat suits studied the rash, sending photos to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta.

“They didn’t tell us very much at all,” one passenger told WLS, describing a scene that could have come from the movie “Contagion.” “When they come on in masks and gloves, you think the worst.”

Monkeypox is a rare and sometimes fatal disease similar to smallpox that occurs mostly in central and western Africa. It’s contracted through contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids, and can spread among humans through fluids and contaminated clothes or bedding, according to the CDC.

The monkeypox rash consists of raised, fluid-filled bumps, and is usually accompanied by fever, headache and lymph node swelling. Bed bug bites, on the other hand, cause a swollen and red area that may or may not be itchy, without the other symptoms.

Sievers, who was sitting near the bathroom on the plane, recalled the worried looks from other passengers when it became clear she was the cause of the quarantine.

“You could see them thinking, ‘Is it safe to use the bathroom?’” she told WLS.

After studying the rash and searching for other signs of infectious disease, health officials released Sievers and her fellow passengers.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) April 27, 2012

New York has become more accepting of bed bug presence. A report from nbcnewyork.com dated April 24 said that panic over bed bugs has subsided in the city. However, the pests still remain a big problem to the residents. And so, BedBugBully.com suggested the use of a spray to kill bed bugs fast and easy and to avoid a major infestation.

According to the report, New Yorkers’ panic over bed bugs has now turned to acceptance as evident in their tone in bed-bug-related calls. Getting bed bugs is not as shocking anymore to the residents said Natalie Raben of one of the city’s extermination firms.

Apart from the people’s reaction about the pests’ presence, there were also changes in the number of complaints and calls about bed bugs. As detailed by the report, the complaints received by the city’s Department of Housing, Preservation and Development decreased by 12 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. In number, the recorded 10 241 complaints went down to 9 029.

Here is part of the report Panic Over Bed Bugs Ebbed Out in New York from BedBugBully.com

In the recent list of bed bug infested cities, New York ranked high. It placed at number nine. However, things are looking up for New Yorkers. Panic over bed bugs and even the number of bed bug cases reportedly went down this year.

Based on the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development’s record, complaints about bed bug infestation in the city decreased by 12 percent this fiscal year. From 10, 241 last year, the complaints went down to 9, 029 this year. Even bed bug complaints against landlords jumped down this year for 19 percent numbering from 3 3559 to 2. 893. Calls regarding bed bugs also decreased by 17 percent with last years’ 8, 736 falling to 7, 245.

Read more of the report New York’s Panic Over Bed Bugs Now Lulled at: http://www.bedbugbully.com/blog/york-warmed-bed-bugs-panic-pests-subsided

It’s true that there are several unpleasant things that go with bed bug presence. However, panicking can’t kill them said BedBugBully.com. It advised the public to prepare for their presence and be calmer when it happens instead of going into frenzy over the possibility of their infestation. With that, it added, anybody can get ready and implement a better bed bug elimination strategy.

One idea to prepare for bed bug presence that the website suggested is the purchase of a bed bug spray. The product can kill the pests fast and easy so it can also prevent a massive infestation, said the site. However, it only recommended the use of biodegradable solutions. That’s so victims can kill bed bugs naturally, safely and effectively.

Posted 10:36 PM 4/20/2012 : Bed bugs biting more in Southern Arizona

TUCSON – Bed bug cases are on the rise in Pima County.

The Pima County Health Department investigated 67 claims in 2010. They have investigated 34 so far in 2012, which is on pace for a 50% increase over the past 2 years. Data on how many investigations turned up positive were not immediately available.

Local pest control companies also say they are busy with the bugs.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re clean, poor, rich,” Stephen Thompson with Arizona Pest Control said, “they’re a hitch-hiking bug and they’ll get you.”

Arizona Pest Control reports a 5% increase in calls for bed bugs this year.

Only about 20% of their calls turn into a treatment job.

“Cost is always first and foremost,” Thompson said, “and secondly, is the inconvenience of not being able to sleep in that particular room.”

Treatment can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Eau Claire(WQOW) – Thursday, local business leaders gathered to learn how to keep the bed bugs from biting.

Wil-Kil, a local pest management company, held a “Bed Bug Boot Camp”. Businesses were educated on prevention techniques and the importance of inspections. There was even a demonstration of their canine inspection program, where dogs are able to detect bed bugs.

“We can bring the dogs in and actually validate the treatment was successful before anybody goes and sleeps in that bed or whatever. So the canine technology is being used in so many different ways, more people are being proactive and trying to find problems before they get out of hand” says Randy Allen Wil-Kil pest control regional manager.

Wil-Kil says over the past five years there has been a resurgence of bed bugs, one reason is the large amount of people traveling from continent to continent.

Readmore: Local, News, Bed Bugs, Bead Bug Dogs, Dogs that Sniff out Bed Bugs, Not just Drugs or Bombs. Newest Sniffing Target for Dogs: Bed Bugs, Yarro, Bed Bug Dog, Yarro the Bed Bug Dog, Merrill’s Detector Dogs Service

Dogs can be trained to do some amazing things, like track down lost children, detect bombs or find drugs. Now, there are canines in Georgetown County that can sniff out a nasty pest that is dogging the tourism industry: bed bugs.

Yarro, a two-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, has a favorite game. It involves sniffing out a jar full of bed bugs that’s hidden in one of five large white containers set up in a row on the property atMerrill’s Detector Dogs Service near Browns Ferry.

When Yarro alerts on the right container, he’ll sit right down and stare at it. To reward him, the trainer releases a tennis ball, Yarro’s favorite toy.

When it comes to detecting bed bugs, Yarro and his buddies at Merrill’s are amazing.

“The pillow today (that Yarro alerted on in an earlier test) just had a couple of bed bugs in it. We train from one to hundreds,” said Yaro’s handler, Kathy Heselton.

Merrill’s Service has been in the detector dog business for many years, but recently added bed bugs to the things their dogs are trained to detect. The dogs will ignore dead bugs.

“It’s the live bugs,” Heselton explains. “They give off a pheromone that the dogs can smell and that’s what they alert to.”

Bed bugsare a growing problem in the U.S., especially for hotels. Merrill’s has quickly expanded from one bed bug detecting dog to five.

“Right now, they’re strong in Florida, Georgia. South Carolina is our focus with this Southern group. We have dogs in Maine and New England as well.”

Dewayne Taylor is a Junction City councilman by night and a hired killer by day.

He works for Four Seasons Pest Control, all over Kentucky, in both private homes and with commercial contracts. His job includes exterminating bed bugs, a pest that has made a comeback in the United States since the use of DDT was discontinued.

Isee ads with companies guaranteeing to get rid of them, but no reputable company would say such a thing, said Taylor. We treat and, if needed, we treat again. You go on vacation and bring them back, and we treat again. Its probably going to be an ongoing battle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the bugs carry no diseases but, like mosquitos, feed on blood and can cause itchy red, welt-like bites.

They can hitchhike into homes on the bottoms of shoes, luggage or infested furniture and hide in places like crevices of mattresses and behind headboards attached to walls. One of the tell-tale signs of their existence is dark-stained splotches in the seams of mattresses or box springs or bedside upholstered chairs.

The stains are the dried excrement produced from digesting human blood.

Taylor said the real damage an infestation does is to peoples nerves. Its mentally a strain. The nerves get all tore up.

When treating homes for bed bugs, Taylor wears a hazmat suit that he throws away afterward.

The main thing is to keep people out after we apply chemicals, he said. At least six hours, but Id say 24 to be certain.

In addition to chemicals, theres a new weapon in the fight to eradicate bed bugs dogs.

POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) – A Region 8 News investigation into bed bugs at a local hotel. The Randolph County Health Department found the severe case of bed bugs at the Cottonwood Inn in Pocahontas.

“They come out at night, but they will retreat to areas like the corners of the room and behind the electrical receptacles,” said Randolph County Health Department Administrator Kathy Smith.

They’re creatures so small they’re almost hard to recognize…bed bugs! And these unwelcome guests are taking over a Pocahontas Motel.

It’s a story we uncovered through a bed bug inspection report obtained from the Randolph County Health Department. The investigation was conducted Tuesday at the Cottonwood Inn.

Bed bugs were traced in multiple rooms with each room identical in nature. Page after page of the report was classified with a stage 3 inspection ranking, with inspectors observing live bugs, blood spots, and eggs in several rooms. Inspectors were not allowed to exam the owners private quarters, but the owners did agree to have the unit treated.

For the past several years, Black River Technical College has rented rooms from the inn to house officers going through the police academy training program.

“We have about 32 that have to stay locally overnight because it’s too far to drive. So they stay here and we’ve been able to house them at the Cottonwood Inn,” said BRTC Vice President Roger Johnson.

It was after some concerns were brought up by some of the officers, that college officials felt the need to contact the Health Department. Randolph County Health Department Administrator Kathy Smith says that’s all it took for them to step in.

“If anyone suspects there is a problem, then we go out and check. We have to inspect a minimum of two rooms,” said Smith. For every room infected, inspectors much also examine any adjoining room. Smith says the health department is working with the college in handling their situation.

“Once we access a facility and we identify a problem, then we go to the complainant for education instructions about how to rid themselves of the bed bugs and we relocate people,” said Smith.@

Lawrenceville, NJ (PRWEB) March 28, 2012

Last week, Orkin (a subsidiary of Rollins Inc.) released its top 50 bed bug cities list for 2011 and entomologists and pest control professional are currently debating what factors effect fluctuations in bed bug populations in a given city. Is the population dependent on high tourism, such as New York (#9 on list) or Los Angeles (#5), warmer average summer temperatures in southern cities like Dallas (#7), or are trends from city to city driven more by warmer than average seasonal temperatures?

Although these types of lists provide insight into trends within a city, bed bug awareness and prevention continues to be the critical step in minimizing the spread of this pest.

This recent list about bed bugs should not cause panic or provide a sense of security for residents in these particular cities, said Jeffrey White, Technical Director and Research Entomologist at BedBug Central. Although a city may have moved on the list, many factors can influence the rankings on this list. For example, since only one company was evaluated, this company could have multiple chains or a greater influence and presence in one city over another.

Over the past year, the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development (HPD) in New York City reported a small decrease in bed bug complaints for the first time since the resurgence started. A decrease in bed bug calls may be due to an increase public awareness from the various media coverage this pest has received or due to the efforts of NYC to institute bed bug policies recommended by the Bed Bug Advisory Board.

In contrast, Dallas, a city with limited media bed bug coverage, reported significant increases in bed bug service calls in 2011 compared with 2010.

In addition to looking at trends within cities, many experts in the Northeast are wondering what affect the warmer than normal winter that has recently ended will have on summer bed bug populations.

We have definitely documented for the past few years that bed bugs show a seasonal trend where July through September are their peak time, said White. Although bed bugs are a problem year round, this significant peak in activity during the warmer months is most likely due to the warmer temperatures inside the home or other public places.

In response to the warmer than average winter in the Northeast, BedBug Central asked several companies in the Northeast to compare winter 2011 to winter 2012 bed bug service calls to see if there has been an increase in bed bug populations.

Most companies we spoke to are not reporting an increase this winter in bed bug calls in residential homes compared to last winter, said White. That being said this does not conclude that the warmer than average winter temperatures will not affect summer bed bugs. Unfortunately we wont gain additional insight until the summer is behind us.
