The World Choir Games come to Cincinnati in 47 days, and theTri-State is doing a lot to prepare for the event that is expected to bring thousands of visitors.

Part of the preparation involves ridding area hotels of bed bugs.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department tells FOX19 three of the four hotels that have been designated as hotels for choirs and their families have had bed bug complaintswithin the last two years.

“Any hotel has the chance of being exposed to bed bugs because of the nature of the game, it doesn’t matter how good of job you do as hotel management in addressing the issue,” said Steve Divine, NKY Health Department’s Environmental Health and Safety Director.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department oversees 66 hotels and motelsandDivine says more than half of those establishments have had at least one bed bug complaint over the last year.

Divine says there office has been notified of four Northern Kentucky hotels that will be used for the choir games in July.

The Drawbridge Hotel had the most visitor bed bug complaints with six within the last two years.

The Hampton Inn in Covington had one complaint, the Holiday Inn Riverfront in Covington also had one complaint, and the Comfort Inn in Erlanger had no complaints.

“Both sides of the river are trying to address it aggressively,” said Divine.”But having said that we expect the facilities to be proactive and have their management, cleaning staff and their maintenance staff check for those type of issues every time they’re in a room.”

Combating bed bugs for the World Choir Games

If you’re going on vacation this Memorial Day Weekend one thing might be in the back of your mind – bed bugs. The Northern Kentucky-Cincinnati area is one of the top areas in the nation when it comes to bed bug complaints.

In Lexington, the health department gets about 30 complaints a month, that’s an average of one call every night.

“A lot of times people think bed bugs will only affect lower income and that’s simply not the case. Bed bugs don’t ask for tax returns. They go all across Lexington. They’re in every zip code, they’re in every area code around Central Kentucky,” explains LFCHD Communication Officer Kevin Hall.

Hall recommends you check between mattresses and around headboards before laying down on a hotel bed.

The Fayette County Health Department says 19 of Lexington’s 56 hotels had bed bug complaints in the last year.

Despite their best efforts, some people in Cincinnati are bringing home bed bugs in some creepy and unexpected ways, FOX19 News has learned.

Over the past month, we have been talking with bed bug experts, business owners — and you — about what you’re seeing.

What may get you scratching involuntarily are the stories about the places you’d never expect to catch bed bugs.

FOX19 viewer Kevin, writing on the station’s Facebook page, says he got them after renting a moving truck.

“It’s the only place that it could have been,” he said, “as the place I moved from did not have them and my new home did not have them to start.”

We’ve heard similar stories, too. The problem is some rental companies don’t properly inspect or clean their trucks after a family has turned-in the one they rented. So if they had bed bugs they’re passed along to the next family that rents the truck.

FOX19 visited a large moving company in our area to see how their employees try to prevent carrying bed bugs from house to house. You’ll see that part of the story Wednesday night at 10 o’clock.

We’ll also meet a man who got bed bugs after hip replacement surgery. One of the medical devices he rented was infested with them. He has pictures of the bite marks to prove it.

Theres Lance Armstrong, an icon in a sport laced with doping. Dope has been as integral a part of pro cycling as a football is to football. Armstrong wins the Tour de France seven times in a row. It is impossible to believe he wasnt doping. But, despite what seems to be perpetual investigations in France and the U.S., despite allegations of past teammates, past gofers, and past friends, no one has ever made a single doping charge stick to the seven-time champ. Indeed, just two months ago the U.S. attorney in L.A. closed a two-year investigation into Armstrong, this one dealing with doping during his tenure on the U.S. Postal Service team (19982004).

If youre Floyd Landis, this has got to be bitter, bitter news. The bastard cheat got away with it again. Armstrong, who has an estimated net worth of $125 million, gets to keep his money, trophies, endorsement deals, business interests, and fancy friends. Meantime, Floyd eats bed bugs to survive.

And to make things incredibly, impossibly worse, on the heels of Armstrongs latest victory comes news that Floyd is the target of a federal investigation. Indeed, ESPN reports that a San Diego grand jury has been hearing witnesses at the U.S. District Court on Front Street for the past year.

The feds are looking into mail- and wire-fraud charges against Landis in regards to his legal defense fund. Said fund was set up after he was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title. Authorities said he tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

The guy cant catch a break. Back in 2010, Landis wore a wire and carried a small video camera for former IRS, current FDA, super steroid investigator Jeff Novitzky, into the home of Michael Ball. Ball owned a bad-boy cycling team, Rock Racing, and wanted to put Landis on his roster. In return, Landis wears a wire into his apartment.

While wearing a wire for Novitzky, Landis was also working with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and who knows how many others in Federal Police World, ratting out past teammates and employers. And now Federal Police World turns on him, the last honest man left in professional cycling, a simple soldier trying to clean up his sport.

To recap, Landis won the 2006 Tour de France and was busted for doping. Now comes the Floyd Fairness Fund. ESPN.com reports he raised more than $1 million and that $300,000 to $400,000 came from small individual donations and merchandise sales.

Go over to YouTube and run a search on Floyd Fairness Fund. The first hit is a March 30, 2007, video of Floyd pitching his fund. The video runs 7:22 but is blacked out after the first 3:30. Now run a Google video search on Floyd Fairness Fund. That YouTube video turns up all over the web but always with the last 3:30 deleted. In fact, I couldnt find the missing 3:30 anywhere on the internet. Lucky for us, I wrote about that specific video before it was blacked out:

The part of the video that interests me are shots of him at what looks to be a restaurant. Hes standing in a makeshift holding area talking to two women. You hear him being introduced, All of you, welcome the 2006 Tour de France champion, Floyd Landis! He straightens his shoulders and walks toward bright lights and sustained applause. Landis has his, Im innocent spiel memorized, he has his foundation executive director there, he has his foundation chairman there, hes posing for pictures, hes signing autographs, hes working the room. Thats when it hits you. This is personal, hes lying to people one person at a time.

Youve got to wonder how many bike shops, shopping malls, county fairs, restaurants, neighborhood pubs, book signings, festivals, and fairs it took to raise $300,000 in small donations from people who believed in him. How many, 200? More than 200? He lied at every one of those appearances. How many media interviews did he give, 100…200? He lied during every interview.

Isee ads with companies guaranteeing to get rid of them, but no reputable company would say such a thing, said Taylor. We treat and, if needed, we treat again. You go on vacation and bring them back, and we treat again. Its probably going to be an ongoing battle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the bugs carry no diseases but, like mosquitos, feed on blood and can cause itchy red, welt-like bites.

They can hitchhike into homes on the bottoms of shoes, luggage or infested furniture and hide in places like crevices of mattresses and behind headboards attached to walls. One of the tell-tale signs of their existence is dark-stained splotches in the seams of mattresses or box springs or bedside upholstered chairs.

The stains are the dried excrement produced from digesting human blood.

Taylor said the real damage an infestation does is to peoples nerves. Its mentally a strain. The nerves get all tore up.

When treating homes for bed bugs, Taylor wears a hazmat suit that he throws away afterward.

The main thing is to keep people out after we apply chemicals, he said. At least six hours, but Id say 24 to be certain.

In addition to chemicals, theres a new weapon in the fight to eradicate bed bugs dogs.

Last week, Orkin (a subsidiary of Rollins Inc.) released its top 50 bed bug cities list for 2011 and entomologists and pest control professional are currently debating what factors effect fluctuations in bed bug populations in a given city. Is the population dependent on high tourism, such as New York (#9 on list) or Los Angeles (#5), warmer average summer temperatures in southern cities like Dallas (#7), or are trends from city to city driven more by warmer than average seasonal temperatures?

Although these types of lists provide insight into trends within a city, bed bug awareness and prevention continues to be the critical step in minimizing the spread of this pest.

This recent list about bed bugs should not cause panic or provide a sense of security for residents in these particular cities, said Jeffrey White, Technical Director and Research Entomologist at BedBug Central. Although a city may have moved on the list, many factors can influence the rankings on this list. For example, since only one company was evaluated, this company could have multiple chains or a greater influence and presence in one city over another.

Over the past year, the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development (HPD) in New York City reported a small decrease in bed bug complaints for the first time since the resurgence started. A decrease in bed bug calls may be due to an increase public awareness from the various media coverage this pest has received or due to the efforts of NYC to institute bed bug policies recommended by the Bed Bug Advisory Board.

In contrast, Dallas, a city with limited media bed bug coverage, reported significant increases in bed bug service calls in 2011 compared with 2010.

In addition to looking at trends within cities, many experts in the Northeast are wondering what affect the warmer than normal winter that has recently ended will have on summer bed bug populations.

We have definitely documented for the past few years that bed bugs show a seasonal trend where July through September are their peak time, said White. Although bed bugs are a problem year round, this significant peak in activity during the warmer months is most likely due to the warmer temperatures inside the home or other public places.

In response to the warmer than average winter in the Northeast, BedBug Central asked several companies in the Northeast to compare winter 2011 to winter 2012 bed bug service calls to see if there has been an increase in bed bug populations.

Most companies we spoke to are not reporting an increase this winter in bed bug calls in residential homes compared to last winter, said White. That being said this does not conclude that the warmer than average winter temperatures will not affect summer bed bugs. Unfortunately we wont gain additional insight until the summer is behind us.

DENVER – Pests in your home can be a nuisance, but one woman says the practice of getting rid of those pests in her apartment complex is turning her life upside down.

A 9NEWS viewer contacted us and says Pinnacle Real Estate Management has a contract with a pest control company that sprays every two weeks.

The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, says she’s never seen bed bugs or cockroaches in her place at in the 1400 block of Jersey Street in Denver, but every two weeks, she has to pack up her life for spraying.

“It doesn’t even seem like home,” she told 9NEWS, “because we’re always packing up everything.”

The viewer says she’s been living in the building for almost a year. The previous management company sprayed every month. The new one, Pinnacle Real Estate Management, has been spraying for cockroaches and bed bugs every two weeks.

This means residents have to pack up their belongings every single time.

“Clean out every closet, floorboards of every closet, pack up the bathroom, pack up bedroom, lift up the bed, closet in the bedroom, kitchen, pack up the kitchen, every dish,” she said. “Pots and pans in the kitchen, including the living room, pick up everything and pack it away in a bag and cover it.”

Pinnacle Property Management refused to talk to 9NEWS on camera.

9NEWS has left a message for Best Buy Pest Control, which is the company the property management company uses to spray for bugs.

The viewer says she’s had just about as much luck with both of those parties herself.

A mother in Severn, Maryland recently won her court battle against a furniture store that sold her two bed bug infested bed bunks. According to the report, she and her sons received $225,000 for the ordeal they had to go through due to the bed bug infestation.

Adarien Jackson first encountered bed bugs back in July 2010 when her son Kaden complained of itchy bumps on his ankle. First thought of as allergies, her son was given allergy drugs by a dermatologist. They also tried diet changes and oatmeal baths. However, it was when his other son, Kyler, began complaining of being crawled over by bugs in the middle of the night that she found out that bed bugs were the ones causing the problem.

First denied a refund, Jackson filed a suit in December 2010 against Calidad Furniture & Linen Inc seeking only $150 000 in damages. After a year, the jury of ruled out in her favor awarding her more than what she sought. Her case was deemed one of the largest bed bug liability judgments in the country today.

Feeling oddly itchy these days, L.A.? That’s to be expected. Pest control company Orkin recently released a list of bug-infested cities that’s making our skin crawl.

Los Angeles has landed the number 5 spot in the “Top 50 Bed Bug Cities.” We rank just behind the even buggier cities of Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit and Denver. Making our stomachs turn more is the fact that L.A. jumped from spot 25 to 5 from 2010 to 2011.

What’s causing this nasty infestation? Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. says in a release, “Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity. The changes could also be because the bed bug population is increasing overall, or even because the public is becoming more aware of bed bugs and has become better adept at identifying them.”

Harrison also notes, to our dismay, that bed bugs multiply quickly, are “great hitchhikers” and “can be found in other places than the bedroom.” The little blood-suckers carry over 30 different human pathogens but are not known to transmit diseases.

If you notice itchy welts or red marks on your skin, you may be faced with the double b’s. They resemble apple seeds in size and color and are nocturnal, and Harrison advises residents to “check mattress seams, sheets and furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames for small reddish-brown spots and lightly-colored molted bed bug skins.” Blech.

Three other Golden State cities made the list, including San Francisco at #12, San Diego at #26 and Sacramento at #41.

L.A. Ranks #5 in "Top 50 Bed Bug Cities"

Pest control company Orkin has released their annual list of the most bed bug-ridden cities in the U.S. and it turns out San Diego lets the bed bugs bite — but not as much as other cities.

Orkin ranked Americas Finest City number 26 on the list, which is based on the number of bed bug treatments the company performed in 2011.

The top spot for bed bugs went to Cincinnati, Ohio. Chicago took home second place, while Detroit came in third for bed bug infestation and Denver ranked fourth.

Los Angeles took the fifth spot on the list, up a whopping 20 spots from last year, when it came in at number 25. Dallas/Fort Worth took 7th place, a drastic change from 50th place last year.

Perennial bed bug hotspot New York City dropped two places to ninth, while the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area took the 12th spot.

Overall, the number of bed bug incidents climbed 33.6-percent over the previous year.

“The changes in some cities’ rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S.,” said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison.

“Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity.”

To avoid bringing bed bugs home from a trip, Orkin advices travelers to remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P.

It stands for the following: Survey bed surfaces for small, rust-colored spots on the sheets. Lift and look for pesky bed bugs in hiding spots such as underneath the mattress or furniture, Elevate luggage or a rack or chair, away from the bed. Examine luggage carefully while repacking. Place all clothing from luggage immediately in the dryer for at least 15 minutes on the highest setting as soon as returning home from a trip.

GJ Ranks 37th In Top 50 Cities With Bed Bug Outbreaks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new report that has been released ranks Baltimore City No. 18 out of 50 U.S. cities when it comes to bed bugs.

The company, Rollins , owns seven pest companies and released the report Monday.

Cincinnati ranked number one followed by Chicago, Detroit, and Denver.

Salisbury, Maryland ranked No. 43.

Rollins officials, who also own Orkin, say it has seen a more than 30 percent increase in bed bug business since 2010.

WASHINGTON – Chests swell with pride when cities are placed atop various lists: Best City for Families; City with the Best Pizza; City with the Best Parks.

But the newest list of the top 50 cities might have mayors and city managers running for cover — the Top 50 Cities for Bed Bugs.

Orkin, the pest control company, has ranked cities based on the number of bed bug treatments they conducted in 2011. Cincinnati is at the top of the list, followed by Chicago, Detroit and Denver.

D.C. is eighth on Orkin’s list, but the good news for the nation’s capital is that D.C. has dropped from fifth place in 2010.

“Bed bugs continue to be everywhere in the United States and appear to be moving further south than they originally were in high concentrations,” said Ron Harrison, Orkin entomologist.

Reflecting the spread of bed bugs into southern climates, Los Angeles jumped from 25th place in 2010 to fifth place on Orkin’s list for 2011. Dallas/Forth Worth has leaped from 50th place to seventh.

Richmond is 10th on the list, up six places. Baltimore is 18th, down six places. Salisbury is up 46 spots to No. 43.

Harrison finds the list interesting for the way it’s expanded, “from the cities in the Northeast and the Midwest to the Southern cities,” he said.

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles climbed 20 spots to fifth in the nation in number of bed bug incidents treated by pest control company Orkin last year.

The company recently released a list of the top 50 cities based on the number of bed bug treatments it did in 2011.

The overall number of incidents climbed 33.6 percent over the previous year.

Cincinnati had the highest number of bed bug treatments, followed by Chicago, Detroit, Denver and Los Angeles.

The perennial hotspot New York City dropped two places to ninth.

The San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area was 12th, San Diego, 26th, and Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, 41st.

“The changes in some cities’ rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S.,” said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison. “Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity.

The rankings could also reflect an overall rise in population or greater public awareness of bed bugs and how to identify them, Harrison said.
