CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) –

Despite their best efforts, some people in Cincinnati are bringing home bed bugs in some creepy and unexpected ways, FOX19 News has learned.

Over the past month, we have been talking with bed bug experts, business owners — and you — about what you’re seeing.

What may get you scratching involuntarily are the stories about the places you’d never expect to catch bed bugs.

FOX19 viewer Kevin, writing on the station’s Facebook page, says he got them after renting a moving truck.

“It’s the only place that it could have been,” he said, “as the place I moved from did not have them and my new home did not have them to start.”

We’ve heard similar stories, too. The problem is some rental companies don’t properly inspect or clean their trucks after a family has turned-in the one they rented. So if they had bed bugs they’re passed along to the next family that rents the truck.

FOX19 visited a large moving company in our area to see how their employees try to prevent carrying bed bugs from house to house. You’ll see that part of the story Wednesday night at 10 o’clock.

We’ll also meet a man who got bed bugs after hip replacement surgery. One of the medical devices he rented was infested with them. He has pictures of the bite marks to prove it.

Tune in Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. to FOX19.

Dewayne Taylor is a Junction City councilman by night and a hired killer by day.

He works for Four Seasons Pest Control, all over Kentucky, in both private homes and with commercial contracts. His job includes exterminating bed bugs, a pest that has made a comeback in the United States since the use of DDT was discontinued.

Isee ads with companies guaranteeing to get rid of them, but no reputable company would say such a thing, said Taylor. We treat and, if needed, we treat again. You go on vacation and bring them back, and we treat again. Its probably going to be an ongoing battle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the bugs carry no diseases but, like mosquitos, feed on blood and can cause itchy red, welt-like bites.

They can hitchhike into homes on the bottoms of shoes, luggage or infested furniture and hide in places like crevices of mattresses and behind headboards attached to walls. One of the tell-tale signs of their existence is dark-stained splotches in the seams of mattresses or box springs or bedside upholstered chairs.

The stains are the dried excrement produced from digesting human blood.

Taylor said the real damage an infestation does is to peoples nerves. Its mentally a strain. The nerves get all tore up.

When treating homes for bed bugs, Taylor wears a hazmat suit that he throws away afterward.

The main thing is to keep people out after we apply chemicals, he said. At least six hours, but Id say 24 to be certain.

In addition to chemicals, theres a new weapon in the fight to eradicate bed bugs dogs.

A Severn mother gets the favor of the jury in a bed bug case against a furniture store and gets $225,000 for the damages.
A Severn mother gets the favor of the jury in a bed bug case against a furniture store and gets $225,000 for the damages. On the other hand, BedBugControl911.com suggested the use of a safe bed bug spray to other bed bug victims for an effective yet inexpensive treatment.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) March 21, 2012

Based on the report by the BaltimoreSun.com, Calidad Furniture & Linen Inc was named the defendant in the suit. Jackson filed the lawsuit last December 01, 2010 with the case number 02C10157321 at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County Civil System. It said that her problem with bed bugs started in July 2010. It was when her six-year old son Kaden and his twin brother Kyler complained of being bitten and crawled-in by bugs just weeks after the beds were delivered that she knew about the infestation.

When Jackson complained to the company about her bed bug encounter in her sons’ bunks, it is said that she was denied a refund. Hence she filed a suit against the company. Originally seeking just $150,000 for damages, her recently concluded case is now one of the largest bed bug liability judgments with her receiving $75,000 more than what she sought.

A mother in Severn, Maryland recently won her court battle against a furniture store that sold her two bed bug infested bed bunks. According to the report, she and her sons received $225,000 for the ordeal they had to go through due to the bed bug infestation.

Adarien Jackson first encountered bed bugs back in July 2010 when her son Kaden complained of itchy bumps on his ankle. First thought of as allergies, her son was given allergy drugs by a dermatologist. They also tried diet changes and oatmeal baths. However, it was when his other son, Kyler, began complaining of being crawled over by bugs in the middle of the night that she found out that bed bugs were the ones causing the problem.

First denied a refund, Jackson filed a suit in December 2010 against Calidad Furniture & Linen Inc seeking only $150 000 in damages. After a year, the jury of ruled out in her favor awarding her more than what she sought. Her case was deemed one of the largest bed bug liability judgments in the country today.

In July 2010, Adarien Jackson’s 6-year-old son, Kaden, began complaining of itchy bumps on his ankles. They soon turned into a rash and spread to his back, behind his ear and on his eyelid.

To date, the bed bug problem in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is costing the school $300,000 for treatment. Wanting to be of help to minimize the spending, BedBugControl911.com suggested the use of pesticide exempt bed bug spray.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) March 20, 2012

However, BedBugControl911.com said the estimated cost could still increase. That is because the university officials still have two room-to-room scheduled bed bug inspections to complete. And with an amount of $1,300 a room for a bed bug treatment with 197 rooms affected to date, the expense is expected to rise quickly.

The first of the two bed bug inspections is set after the student left for the summer. The second search for the pests in the school housing is due at the end of summer before students move back in. And although the cost of the bed bug control treatment is undeniably huge, the university’s Associate Director Glen Schumann cleared that students will not be burdened by it.

Here is more of the report about Bed Bugs Burdened University of Nebraska with $300,000 Treatment from BedBugControl911.com:

Bed bugs are causing havoc in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The campus housing was reported plagued by the blood-feeding insects two months ago. To date, 197 rooms were found in need of bed bug treatment. And in terms of money, the treatment costs about $300,000.

The estimated amount though is said not final. Because officials are set to conduct two more room-to-room inspection for bed bugs, the cost could still rise. The searches for the pests were scheduled after the students leave for the summer and before they move back in at the end of it.

But despite the big cost of the treatment, at an average cost of $1,300 per room, Associate Director of UNL, Glen Schuman stated that they wouldn’t pass the burden to the students. Nonetheless, he assured that the bed bug problem will be dealt with.

The University of Nebraska-Lincolns housing department has finally put a cost on its bed bug problem and its a big one: $300,000 to date, and the costs are expected to continue.

A recent report by the Cincinnati Health Department indicates that the number of bed bug cases is on the decline. However, State Representative Dale Mallory says he’s skeptical.

“I think that the bed bug calls have declined, from what I’ve seen with the stigma a lot of people are afraid to report bed bug incidents,” he said.

Ohio State University entomologist Dr. Susan Jones says the bed bug problem is alarming. “If you have one in five people reporting bed bugs, a 20% infestation rate, that’s a serious, serious problem.”

The problem was supposed to have been addressed by a bed bug task force, but Mallory says the panel seems to have lost its way.

“After about three months, from what I understand, the city abandoned that plan. The city health department abandoned that plan. So as people called City Hall they were told well we really don’t deal with bed bugs, but we’ll send you a brochure,” he said.

Mallory says he’d like to see the infestation problem eliminated by the time Cincinnati hosts the World Choir Games in June.

University of Cincinnati biology professor Dr. George Uetz says bed bugs had nearly been eliminated back in the 50′s, but pesticides used back in those days are now illegal.

Xavier University biology professor Dr. Annie Ray says the mild winter hasn’t affected other types of insects.

“Things that we call peri-domestic pests like cockroaches…things that live in your house like silverfish…not really insect, but arachnids and some of those house centipedes….they’re really not going to be affected by the weather,” she said.

Dr. Uetz says “If it continues to be on and off wet with warm weather….I think we’ll see swarming mosquitoes and swarming flies.”

(NEW YORK) — The Bay Area has found itself on one of those lists that most cities would probably rather not be on — the top 50 cities for bed bugs.

Rollins, the corporation that owns seven pest control companies, including Orkin, says it has seen a 33.6 percent increase in bed bug business compared to 2010. The company recently released its rankings of U.S. cities in order of the number of bed bug treatments from January to December 2011.

San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, Calif. comes in at number five on the list.

The winner, ehhh, itchy loser, is Cincinnati, while West Palm Beach/Ft. Pierce, Fla. rounded out the rankings.

The city of Cincinnati may soon be losing it’s not-so-desirable status as the “Bed Bug Capitol of the United States.” Today, officials announced that the number of residents who are dealing with bed bugs has declined in just the past two years.

The Cincinnati Health Department says 18 percent of residents are experiencing problems with bed bugs, down from 22 percent in 2010. The Health Department believes its campaign to educate residents about the pesky bugs, which involved assembling a consortium of organization and experts from the City, County and State of Ohio, helped.

Back when “Time Magazine” published its article naming our city as the “Bed Bug Capitol”, the city responded by forming the first bed bug strategic plan in the nation. A series of brochures, fliers, and videos were released and the Health Department worked with schools, businesses, “big box retailers”, pest control companies, local, state and federal government agencies and community groups to develop bed bug control policies and teach effective bed bug control and eradication measures. In addition, the health department licenses Cincinnati hotels and motels, which allows for regular inspections and a quick response to bed bug complaints.

Though bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, they can be an expensive nuisance and cause substantial embarrassment and mental anguish for those experiencing an infestation. Dr. Camille Jones, Cincinnati Assistant Health Commissioner, says “We know that we can make a difference if we work together to provide surveillance, resources and deliver accurate public messages. The City will continue to be aggressive in our response to this very difficult problem and welcome partnership and resources from other levels of government, such as the State of Ohio to assist us.”

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) –

Data released from the Greater Cincinnati Survey conducted by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research demonstrates that Cincinnati residents experiencing problems with bed bugs have declined from 22 percent in 2009 to 18 percent in 2010*. Cincinnati Health Department officials point to this data as an indication that the City’s aggressive outreach and education efforts are working.

These results are an encouraging sign that knowledge has been gained and applied about how to limit the spread of the pesky insects.

Beginning in 2008, the Cincinnati Health Department led an effort to assemble a consortium of organizations and experts from the City, County and State of Ohio to develop one of the first comprehensive Bed Bug Strategic Plans in the nation. Since that time many of the recommendations have been put into practice.

    1) Education. Often individuals have no idea how bed bugs spread, what should be done to limit transmission, or the best ways to eradicate them. A series of brochures, fliers, videos, public service announcements and other materials have been developed and distributed to the community.

    2) Outreach. The Health Department has met with and worked with schools, businesses, “big box retailers”, pest control companies, local, state and federal government agencies and community groups to develop bed bug control policies and attend events to teach effective bed bud control and eradication measures.

    3) Surveillance. The Cincinnati Health Department is one of the first health jurisdictions in the nation to collect hard data which illustrates the scope of bed bugs in the City. In addition the health department licenses City hotels and motels, which allows for regular inspections and a quick response to bed bug complaints.

    4) Advocacy. The Health Department has worked with community partners and governments to apply for grants and lobby the EPA and other governmental entities for assistance with bed bug remediation.

Going forward it is critically important that the City continue to work in partnership with the general community, business community, and county, state and federal agencies to combat bed bugs.

“We know that we can make a difference if we work together to provide surveillance, resources and deliver accurate public messages. The City will continue to be aggressive in our response to this very difficult problem and welcome partnership and resources from other levels of government, such as the State of Ohio to assist us.” Said Dr. Camille Jones Cincinnati Assistant Health Commissioner.

Bed bugs hit New Hanover County Courthouse in North Carolina. Though a judge denied the infestation, BedBugControl911.com still suggested that the property management get a bed bug spray for preparation.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) March 11, 2012

According to the report, a court personnel noticed some bugs in the work area and immediately alarmed the property management. Contrary to reports though, it is said that the infestation is of carpet beetle and not of bed bugs.

Nonetheless, extermination was still implemented in the area. And as said by Judge J.H. Corpening, the process is much easier, that the courthouse was opened the next day. But while the court was closed down, the Superior Court was transferred to Historic Courthouse for the meantime. On the other hand, civil filings were processed at the Office of Juvenile Justice and the warrant service and magistrate at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Given that hundreds to thousands of people come and go in the courthouse though, it’s not impossible that bed bugs will indeed infest the courthouse in the future. And because of that big possibility, BedBugControl911.com suggests that property management give out pics of bed bugs for the right identification of the pests. Also, it advises them to get a bed bug spray ready.

With a solution within reach, the site believes that anybody can control bed bugs more effectively. Among the many bed bug sprays though, BedBugControl911.com only recommends the use of a pesticide exempt solution. For the fast-spreading bed bugs in Florida, the product was a big help to the residents.

And for bed bug sufferers from across the United States to see for themselves how effective the product is, the site is giving out free samples of it.

Visit http://www.bedbugcontrol911.com and get your own sample today.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Bedbugs have become so prevalent in Cleveland that the city now keeps two ambulances in reserve just to replace others as they become infested with the blood-sucking insects.

The city’s Emergency Medical Service also has started issuing protective gowns, booties and hair nets to ambulance crews entering bedbug hotspots tracked by dispatchers on a computer database. The list, which expands andthen contracts as bugs are exterminated, stood at 52 addresses Friday.

“We’ve taken a very aggressive approach,” said Nicole Carlton, acting EMS commissioner. “We always tell our people to be very vigilant.”

Bedbugs have made a nationwide resurgence, reaching Cincinnati several years ago and then migrating up Interstate 71. Fire stations in Cincinnati and Columbus have battled infestations.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health recorded 497 bedbug complaints last year, up from 296 the year before. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health, which covers areas other than Cleveland and Shaker Heights, handled 161 cases in 2011, more than four times the volume two years earlier.

The speck-size, burrowing insects pose no serious health threats, but their bites are painful. Infestations also are difficult to find and eradicate.

In November, Cleveland officials brought a bedbug-sniffing Jack Russell terrier into an ambulance base. The dog, trained to detect the scent of human blood, found bedbugs in a chair. The same day, the terrier checked out ambulance service headquarters — often used for community CPR and first-aid training — but turned up nothing.

Police Chief Michael McGrath issueda memolast month advising officers to be on the lookout for bedbugs. He made recommendations for avoiding contact — for example, don’t sit in homes visited on the job — and said uniforms thought to be infested should be sealed in plastic until washed and dried at high, bedbug-killing temperatures.

Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, went one step farther this week after fielding complaints from union members.

Follmer bought two cases of a spray — 24 bottles at $15 each — that kills the bugs by means of dehydration. He then delivered the spray, an all-natural blend not subject to federal environment regulations, to stations.

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Four children and two adults are without a home because someone was smoking in a room where they had just sprayed isopropyl alcohol, trying to kill bedbugs. Colerain Firefighters responded to the fire in a second floor apartment in the 3500 block of West Galbraith Road around 9:30 Saturday night. Isopropyl Alcohol can be an effective home-remedy to kill bedbugs, but due to its volatile nature is extremely flammable, and even more flammable when using a spray bottle. Smoking in the area is extremely hazardous in this situation. Colerain Township Fire Captain Steve Conn told FOX19, "It can be an effective treatment but you have to read the labels and make sure it's a well ventilated area that you're not providing any kind of an ignition source – furnace, water heater kicking on - any other kind of heat sources, candles, obviously smoking or even just turning on a light switch can cause a spark and if the air mixture is just correct it can actually cause a fire from that." No firefighters or residents were injured during the fire. It did $30,000 worth of damage. The family is receiving assistance from the Red Cross Continue reading →

Professional exterminator Miguel Sanchez, owner of Sky High Termite & Pest Control in Cincinnati, says homeowners should weigh their options carefully when it comes to home treatments. He does not recommend using alcohol as a treatment. He prefers certain chemicals and also steam treatments. Other professionals use large heaters to raise a home’s temperature above the level where bedbugs can survive, although that treatment can be costly.

Sanchez says if a homeowner chooses to apply chemicals themselves, they should know that a professional may not be able to come in later and apply more.

Fortunately, thanks to the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, the state is a leader in fighting the pest. OARDC scientist Susan Jones, who specializes in urban and household insect pests, studies how well bed bug insecticides, detectors, and other products work, serves on bed bug task forces in Columbus and Cincinnati, and has emerged as a national authority. Also, Jones and OARDC scientist Omprakash Mittapalli, an expert on insect molecular biology, recently reported the first detailed study of bed bugs’ genetic makeup. The scientists’ work shows how the bloodsuckers become resistant to common pesticides, a trait that makes killing the pests difficult and expensive. Knowing this, Mittapalli said, “could lead to novel methods of control that are more effective”— saving people and companies money, plus possibly spurring new products.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) –

State Rep. Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati) held the first 2012 meeting of the Joint Bed Bugs Task Force on Thursday.

“Bed bugs will continue to be a problem if we allow them to continue to be a problem,” said Rep. Mallory. “It is my hope that through effective education and programming, we can eliminate this hazard to public health. As the coalition against bed bugs gains allies and the public increases its awareness on how to prevent and to treat bed bug infestations, the bed bug epidemic will inevitably come to an end.”

The collaborative effort between the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is progressing, and has included academia and civil society in the campaign against bed bugs.

In addition to State Representative Mallory, Thursday's meeting of the task force was attended by officials and representatives from Congressman Chabot and Congresswoman Schmidt's offices, Hamilton County Public Health, the City of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority and various private stakeholders.
