LITTLE SILVER, N.J., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — BedBug Chasers, a World Class provider of heat remediation services and manufacturer of US made bed bug heat remediation equipment is franchising its service business. The business features a low entry cost, is a 100% chemical free and Green enterprise, and will be offered through the BedBug Chaser Franchise Corporation.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120508/CG01754)

The cornerstones of this booming franchise program features exclusive access to the patented BedBug Chaser heaters, the BedBug Chasers nationwide rental fleet and training on the BedBug Chasers propriety process. The BedBug Chaser heaters have proven to show a higher ROI than other brands on the market by substantially decreasing treatment times and the ability to heat a larger square foot area per heater.

Outbreaks of bed bug infestations have been sweeping across the United States for the past 5 years in epidemic proportions. Bed bugs have gotten so out of control that the 111th Congress introduced bill H.R.2248 — Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was tasked to investigate the public health implications of bed bugs on lodging and housing. That study centered around the impacts on mental health from bed bugs, their potential for spreading infectious disease, and their contributing to other diseases such as asthma. All studies thus far have agreed that “heat” is one of, if not the safest and most effective way to kill all stages of bed bugs including nymphs and eggs. This further reinforces the time is now for a business like BedBug Chasers to franchise.

In recent times, the media has reported on stories about “super chemical resistant” bed bugs and the dangers that many chemicals pose to people who are exposed to them. BedBug Chasers has researched and developed an eco-friendly and cost effective way to put an end to these chemical resistant bed bug infestations and is making that solution available through its franchise program.

We caught up with VP of Operations Larry Smith to discuss the franchise offering, “BedBug Chasers is the only complete franchised business system to kill bed bugs on premises with 100% chemical free Green electric heat remediation. No other company has all the pieces that we have; manufacturing, proprietary equipment, continued product development and scalability through our rental network. This puts us on Top and in a position to soon be the largest bed bug killing business in the US. Our ROI and Cost per kW is such that BedBug Chasers franchisees can compete dollar for dollar with a properly done chemical treatment, which we all know does not always work. BUT our heat does, every time. BedBug Chasers will become a top rated franchise in a very short time frame because you don’t have to be an exterminator to do this. In many states there is no special license required so this is the perfect opportunity for returning Veterans, middle management caught up in downsizing or tradesman looking to become entrepreneurs!”

    About BedBug Chasers:

BedBug Chasers is a nationwide heat remediation franchised sales, service and rental company providing a 100% Green and Chemical-Free alternative to eliminating bedbugs and other insects in commercial, residential and industrial environments. Using its proprietary, state of the art electric heat technology, BedBug Chasers equipment is capable of facilitating fast, effective and inexpensive heat remediation services throughout the United States.
The rash that prompted a two-hour quarantine of a Delta plane in Chicago Thursday may have been the work of bed bugs, not the monkeypox virus health officials feared.

The itchy passenger was Lise Sievers of Red Wing, Minn., a 50-year-old woman returning home from Uganda, where she was working to adopt two children. Sievers noticed the rash and told her mother, who got worried and called health officials in Indiana.

“It’s just a case of bed bugs,” Sievers told ABC News affiliate WLS after exiting the plane. “I think I’m going to empty a jar of bed bugs on my mom’s bed tonight.”

Other passengers aboard Flight 3163 feared the worst as officers wearing Hazmat suits studied the rash, sending photos to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta.

“They didn’t tell us very much at all,” one passenger told WLS, describing a scene that could have come from the movie “Contagion.” “When they come on in masks and gloves, you think the worst.”

Monkeypox is a rare and sometimes fatal disease similar to smallpox that occurs mostly in central and western Africa. It’s contracted through contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids, and can spread among humans through fluids and contaminated clothes or bedding, according to the CDC.

The monkeypox rash consists of raised, fluid-filled bumps, and is usually accompanied by fever, headache and lymph node swelling. Bed bug bites, on the other hand, cause a swollen and red area that may or may not be itchy, without the other symptoms.

Sievers, who was sitting near the bathroom on the plane, recalled the worried looks from other passengers when it became clear she was the cause of the quarantine.

“You could see them thinking, ‘Is it safe to use the bathroom?’” she told WLS.

After studying the rash and searching for other signs of infectious disease, health officials released Sievers and her fellow passengers.

Eau Claire(WQOW) – Thursday, local business leaders gathered to learn how to keep the bed bugs from biting.

Wil-Kil, a local pest management company, held a “Bed Bug Boot Camp”. Businesses were educated on prevention techniques and the importance of inspections. There was even a demonstration of their canine inspection program, where dogs are able to detect bed bugs.

“We can bring the dogs in and actually validate the treatment was successful before anybody goes and sleeps in that bed or whatever. So the canine technology is being used in so many different ways, more people are being proactive and trying to find problems before they get out of hand” says Randy Allen Wil-Kil pest control regional manager.

Wil-Kil says over the past five years there has been a resurgence of bed bugs, one reason is the large amount of people traveling from continent to continent.

Following an outbreak of bedbugs in University of Nebraska Lincoln’s housing this January, UNO Student Health Services Director Marcia Adler spoke about the topic of bed bugs and our community here at UNO. Adler said prevention through vigilant hygienic practices is a vital component of maintaining a healthy home environment, whether you live in a dorm at University Village, an apartment or find yourself seasonally traveling abroad.

Awareness has been one of the greatest obstacles in prevention and containment. According to Adler, common signs are raised red areas that are overlooked or disregarded as allergies, hives, chigger or mosquito bites.

Two things that distinguish bed bug bites from those of other pests and allergies are appearance and the absence of itching. Bed bug bites are raised red areas that may vary in size and do not have a pin prick mark in them. They also do not turn brown and resolve on their own without infection or fever, Adler said.

Adler suggested using common sense preventative practices in caring for your belongings in your home environment and while traveling abroad. Adler says a good place to start is keeping things off the floor. “These bugs only crawl. They don’t jump or fly. They’ll only get into the things they are allowed to get into,” Adler said. “When traveling, don’t put your luggage on the floor, don’t put your clothes on the floor, shake your clothes out and check out the drawers in a motel or hotel before you use them.” Adler also suggests checking mattress seams for evidence of bed bug wastes, which resembles very small black specks and splotches much like that of mildew.

Adler stressed the importance of laundering thrift shop items immediately after bringing them home and proper disposal of the shopping bags. Never lay the newly purchased thrift clothing out on your bed, Adler said. Proper disposal means the bag is hermetically sealed so that no air remains, and nor would any pest after a few hours.

The Environmental Protection Agency suggest the following:

Reduce the number of hiding places for bed bugs by eliminating clutter.

Frequently wash and heat-dry your bed linens, bed spreads and any clothing that may touch the floor.

Check secondhand furniture, beds, and couches for any signs of bed bug infestation, such as evidence of pest wastes, before bringing them home.

Use of a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs which eliminates many hiding spots. The light color of the encasement makes bed bugs easier to see. Be sure to purchase a high quality encasement that will resist tearing and check it regularly for holes.

With CDC reports showing chemical bed bug treatments are causing human illness, even death, the ThermaPure Heat Process Co-invented by David Hedman is gaining traction in the war on bed bugs.

    (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

Is a chemical war really the best choice when it is proving increasingly less effective and when non-chemical, heat treatments like structural pasteurization co-invented by David Hedman in the patented ThermaPure Heat Process are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and are readily available to mitigate these concerns?

Chemical pesticides historically the first choice in killing bed bugs are increasingly cited as the cause of illness to occupants/residents and pest control applicators.

According to the Sept. 23, 2011 edition of the CDC and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (volume 60, No. 37), acute bed bug pesticide-related illnesses have been reported in at least seven states with one fatality reported due to pesticide poisoning.

But those made ill by pesticides in the CDC report are likely just a fraction of those that are ultimately affected by exposure to these chemicals. Many may overlook minor symptoms and often exposure to chemicals can be cumulative or have an extended latency period with symptoms exhibiting years, even decades later.

Bed bug pesticides are toxic. While commonly used pyrethrins are only slightly acutely toxic, they are a sensitizer/irritant that is considered to cause cancer. Permethrin is moderately acutely toxic, possibly cancer-causing, and can cause endocrine disruption. Propoxur, which is not registered by the EPA for bed bug control but has been used illegally by some pest control companies, is highly toxic and probably cancer-causing, with reproductive effects, neurotoxicity, and kidney/liver damage.

According to the CDC report, pesticide-related illnesses have been caused after chemical treatments conducted by both individual consumers and professional pest management companies.

Children, in particular, are at risk. They face the highest pesticide exposure risk since they tend to sit, crawl or roll on the ground, near application sites where pesticide vapors and residues may settle.

Also troubling is the CDCs evidence that pesticide-resistant bed bugs are on the rise and have been confirmed in at least five states, including California, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia.

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Leading experts participating in a recent Bed Bug Summit have called 2012 a critical year in the goal to control the U.S. bed bug invasion. Entomologists, pest control professionals and manufacturers of products designed to stem the bed bug tide all weighed-in, and agreed that what we do this year will be crucial.

They help people see the signs of an infestation while keeping the bugs from spreading to other areas of the home.

Each year the challenges of fighting bed bugs change and grow, said James Bell, CEO of Protect-A-Bed, a company that makes mattress encasement products to keep bed bugs away from their human prey. Now that the industry has begun working together its easier to see the best way forward.

Some Cities Winning, Others in the Crosshairs

Experts agreed that bed bug reports in some large U.S. cities such as New York will plateau in 2012 due mainly to increased education and prevention. However, they caution that the number of reports is expected to grow in other cities not previously experiencing high levels of bed bug colonies, especially in Southern states.

Out of Home Infestations to Rise

Most of the experts also predicted a significant increase in bed bug colonies outside the home, in places like hotels and office buildings.

According to Peter Trentacoste, assistant vice president of Student Affairs at Northern Kentucky University, staying vigilant for bed bugs is important to keeping the pests out of public places. He explained that in order to fight the bugs, talking about the issue and providing education is a key.

In relation to colleges and universities, there are quite a few places that continue to have their heads in the sand, Trentacoste said. They dont want to talk about bed bugs until they have a major issue.

Bed Bugs Struggle Worse for Some Americans than Others

Using a Bed Bug Mattress Cover – 3 Tips to Prevent These Insects For Good

by marex on June 19, 2010

Making use of a bed bug mattress cover can come in handy especially when traveling as even nice hotels can become unsuspecting victims of infestation problems. In fact, a recent study suggests that the increase in world travel may have contributed to the rise in reported incidents each year. Here are 3 tips to help prevent these critters from attacking.

1. Use a bed bug mattress cover

As mentioned above, even nice hotels may have bug problems in certain rooms but this is generally an exception. To be safe, you can make use of a cover that encases the entire mattress which works to keep these insects from attacking if they are nesting in the bed. Since these critters attack late at night, using a cover will help prevent them from getting in and out of the mattress.

2. Thoroughly wash your clothes and luggage

Bed bugs can easily transmit between clothes and luggage which is why it is essential that you thoroughly wash everything before heading home on a trip. This will ensure that even if these insects did somehow latch onto your luggage, you can prevent them from entering you home. Even if you do not travel frequently, it is still a good idea to always keep your clothes clean.

3. Keep a spray with you

If you notice bed bugs in your room or on your mattress, a quick way to eliminate them is using insecticides specifically designed to kill them. Be sure to only use a light mist on the affected area as some sprays contain toxic chemicals that are not healthy to breathe in. If you are constantly around children or pets, then it may be good idea to get a spray that does not contain hazardous ingredients.

When it comes to prevention, be sure to use a bed bug mattress when traveling and to always thoroughly wash your clothes. A good idea before traveling would be to read reviews on certain hotels you expect to stay in to make sure infestation problems are kept at a minimum. Be sure to keep the above factors in mind when it comes to preventing bed bugs from attacking.

Winter and insects usually don’t go together, except for the dreaded bed bug.

“The complaints we get about bed bugs tend to increase this time of the year, which is just about the opposite for every other insect I can think of except maybe for stink bugs,” said Tadhgh Rainey, county Division of Public Health Services manager.

Although there aren’t good methods to monitor bed bug populations, it seems that Hunterdon mirrors the rise seen nationwide. Tadhgh recalled that he saw his first live bed bug in an apartment complex here about nine years ago.

“Fast track that to 2012,” he said, and the departments gets calls “from everywhere: private homes, camps, offices, not to mention apartments and condos.”

A number of reasons probably explain the surge; pesticides like DDT that once killed bed bugs are no longer allowed, the bugs have developed resistance to chemical treatments and travelers inadvertently have brought them home in luggage.

Of the 18 species of bed bugs in North America, two are found in Hunterdon and 95% identified by the Health Division, said Rainey, are the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius. The rest are Eastern bat bugs. The two look nearly identical and it takes a microscope to tell them apart.

While bed bugs don’t spread disease, they do feed on our blood during the night. Creepy! Their bites may cause allergic reactions, including welts and itching.

Unfortunately there’s no magic bullet to get rid of them. “I’ve been in maybe 150 places with bed bugs over the past couple of years,” said Rainey. “Based on my experience, I tell people that there’s no chemical right now that’s going to solve your problem with this insect so don’t even waste your time or money.”

He instead recommends a combination of mechanical removal and heat techniques. Regularly wash and heat-dry all bed linens and treat mattresses, upholstered furniture and cushions with “dry” steam. There are also some technologies involving infrared heat. Thoroughly vacuum all upholstery — including the undersides — as well as under and around bed frames and legs, including any cracks and crevices in the room.

Consider using special bed bug mattress and box spring covers. And de-clutter the area around your bed to limit bed bug hiding places.

Anyone who suspects a bed bug problem may call the Health Division at 908-788-1351 for more guidance.

Prevention is prudent, especially for travelers. “You can go to a hotel room and get eaten alive by bed bugs and still not bring them home if you do a few things,” said Rainey.

Keep bags in a closet or the bathroom, far away from the beds, and zip keep them zipped at night. Rainey also sprays the outside of his luggage with a tick repellent containing permethrin, which he said is good at deterring bed bugs.

Once home, if you think you might have been exposed, toss your clothes in the dryer, check your bags thoroughly and you’ll probably be bed bug free.

Persistent bed bugs, contaminated and inadequate food, plus a host of other health and bylaw violations have forced the city to shut down a residential care home for two months.

The city is closing East Avenue Place as of Wednesday by suspending its operating licence. The home for 16 special needs residents is closed until at least April 4. To reopen, owner William Haizel must earn a certificate of compliance and have the home inspected again.

Meanwhile, the tenants have moved to other residential care facilities across the city, said Michelle Baird, Hamilton’s manager of infectious disease prevention.

East Avenue Place was found in violation of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the city’s residential homes licensing bylaw and the city’s property standards bylaw, according to licensing tribunal reports from a Jan. 10 hearing.

The health violations alone numbered about 56, according to Baird. Further to the suspension, Haizel was also twice fined $300 for the food violations, she said.

In 2009, Haizel was fined $4,000 for fire code violations after locking a damaged fire exit with a steel bar.

This past year, the 65 East Ave. S. facility was found to be dirty and in disrepair. Food was contaminated, insubstantial and unhealthy. Contamination, for example, resulted from unwrapped food, both raw and cooked, being stored together, Baird said.

The bed bug infestation persisted despite extermination treatments because Haizel did not follow public health and pest control workers’ instructions on additional steps needed, officials say.

Medical records were incomplete, staff first aid training was insufficient and individual special care plans did not exist for some residents as required.

Also, Haizel was found to be administering prescribed controlled substances without the certificate of training required to do so, according to the tribunal report.

Jerry Belford, who lives across the street from East Avenue Place, says neighbours constantly have problems with the facility and its tenants, who pester neighbours for money or cigarettes and other things.

“The police are down here maybe twice a month.”

This video shows what exterminators and other pest control professionals look for when doing a bed bug inspection and will help you determine if you have a problem. Reynolds Pest Management provides free inspections to determine whether or not you have a bed bug infestation, or other pest problem. Call today for a free no obligation inspection. If you have a need we provide free, no hassle quotes with no contracts required. Distribution Human dwellings, birds nests, and bat caves make the most suitable habitats for bed bugs since they offer warmth, areas to hide, and most importantly hosts on which to feed (Dolling 1991). Bed bugs are not evenly distributed throughout the environment but are instead concentrated in harborages (Usinger 1966). Within human dwellings, harborages include cracks and crevices in walls, furniture, behind wallpaper and wood paneling, or under carpeting (Krueger 2000). Bed bugs are usually only active during night but will feed during the day when hungry (Usinger 1966). Bed bugs can be transported on clothing, in traveler’s luggage, or in bedding and furniture (USDA 1976) but lack appendages to enable them to cling to hair, fur, or feathers, so are rarely found on hosts (Dolling 1991). Description The adult bed bug is a broadly flattened, ovoid, insect with greatly reduced wings (Schuh and …

99% Chemical free Sweep Bedding System will protect your bed 24 hours a day , 7 days a week and is designed to kill bed bugs where they live and breed. New York, NY (PRWEB) January 12, 2012 Sweep® developed by, Innovative Textile Solutions announces a complete bedding system that will effectively kill bed bugs and help prevent an infestation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered technology kills bed bugs that remain in contact with Sweep for 24 hours and is designed to contact them where they live. While the international marketplace has been inundated with fixes for the worldwide bed bug problem the Sweep system is very different than the encasement products on the market that lock bed bugs on the mattress and do not protect the user against any additional bugs that find their way to the bed. Alternatively Sweep is proactive and designed to kill. The mattress pad, mattress bed band and box spring encasement technology have been independently laboratory tested and are a safe, effective and odorless answer to kill bed bugs where they live and breed. The system is 99% chemical free using an active ingredient that is closely related to the naturally occurring chemical in the Chrysanthemum flower. This makes Sweep ideal for use in institutional settings as well as hotels, apartment buildings, college campuses, private homes and anyplace where these bugs may be found. The Sweep system was developed over a 5 year period by a group of textile experts, entomologists and PHd’s to create a safe and effective way to kill bed bugs. “It is in fact a spinoff of the chemistry currently used by the U.S. Military to protect soldiers in the field from insect born disease”, says Jeffrey Erdheim a 35 year textile veteran and I.T.S. partner. In conjunction with the bedding system, Innovative Textile Solutions has developed and registered a full travel and storage system using the same technology that is now ready for distribution. “The new system will be a must have for travelers who recognize the danger of bringing bed bugs home and the importance of prevention” states Jeff Goldman of I.T.S, “and will include luggage liners, garment bags, laptop case, under bed storage and laundry bags.” Bed bugs feed on human blood and a female bed bug is capable of laying up to 500 eggs during the course of its life cycle. The bites are painful as is the stigma associated with an infestation. Sweep systems will protect the user 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is now available for international distribution.
