If your skin isn’t crawling yet it will be soon. You also may want to double check your bed sheets tonight. Bed bugs are on the rise across the country, South Dakota is no exception.

“We have seen a steady increase of bed bug samples being sent in to our clinic.” Said Buyung Hadi, an entomologist with SDSU.

In the pastfour months theSDSU entomology clinic has identifiedfive bed bug samples. A yearly total of three is considered abnormally high.

“Our message today would be for tenants to talk with landlords, heyI got a problem here can you take a look.” Said Kevin Smith, director of building services for Sioux Falls.

Afew Sioux Falls hotels and apartments have seen bed bug cases and the city health department wants people to be aware.

Tim Nicolai was just one of the landlord’s who stopped by for more information on the pests.

“The main reasonI came down today is to see what our next step is in controlling the issue we have before it gets out of hand in Sioux Falls.” Said Nicolai.

The health department says the first step is finding them.

“The bed bugs themselves will congregate in areas close to their host, which is mainly a bed, you’re stationary, not moving, you’re easy to get to and they have nice little corners and tucks in your mattress where they can hide.” Saidhealth program director Denise Patton.

if you think your chances of getting bed bugs is slim to none – except if you pay a visit to mega-metropolitan area like New York City – think again. Right here in the Alamo City the freaky little unwanted pests are popping up.

UTSA says they have detected a few of these tiny biters on campus at the University Oaks, Chisholm Hall and Laurel Village residence facilities. They say three confirmed cases were resolved, and a fourth is currently being treated.

University officials sent out email notices to students in both the affected facilities and also to those living in unaffected residence halls.

With the health and safety of our students in mind, we are working with a local extermination firm to resolve the bed bug issue in one of our residence facilities, said Lionel Maten, UTSA director of housing and residence life. The firm has worked with universities across the region to remediate bed bug incidents and is going above and beyond our protocol in the affected facility. We anticipate resolving the issue today, March 21.

UTSA says here are some identifying signs that you too have been visited by bed bugs:

UTSA students who believe they have been bitten by bed bugs may get treatment at the UTSA Student Health Services on the main and downtown campuses.

Columbus firefighters said that bed bugs are creeping into medic vehicles, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported on Thursday.

Union officials representing Columbus firefighters said that they were growing more concerned about the potential for a full-blown infestation.

“We could potentially be passing bed bugs on from one patient to the next,” International Association of Firefighters Local 67 union president Jack Reall said.

Reall said that firefighters also were concerned about transferring the bugs to their homes.

“If that truck's infested, there's a potential for us to walk out of the truck, into somebody's house, into a fire station, into a business, and carry bed bugs with us,” Reall said.

The Division of Fire's current EMS bed bug protocol does not go far enough, Reall said.

Columbus Division of Fire Chief Kevin Reardon said that the department was in the process of developing a more comprehensive bed bug strategy to protect the city's 1,600 firefighters and 34 fire stations.

Columbus fire currently has a plan in place to dry firefighters' uniforms in high heat if they believe they have been exposed to bed bugs, Kocot reported.

“We've got to take some time to do it right the first time and come up with a policy that's doable, and it's not going to happen overnight,” Reardon said.

Reall said that time is of the essence when it comes to developing a working plan.

“Tell you the truth, I'm completely surprised we have not infested a fire station yet,” Reall said.

Coming back from a bed-bug infestation is time-consuming, but one motel is making gradual progress.

Almost one month ago, the Crown Inn in East Ridge was shut down. Management said it will  probably take another three months before re-opening.

Lowe Wilkins, Program Supervisor of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, said Crown Inn is taking the right steps.

Margaret Everett is looking forward to the day when Crown Inn opens again. Everett said, “They could do everything they could to get it fixed up and get it in running order.”

When the Crown Inn voluntarily shut down on January 25th, Everett was one of the residents who paid by the week and had to find a new place to live.

She's a longtime friend of management. They moved her to the Knight's Inn which is on the same parking lot and run by the same people. “It's been great, I've had no problem whatsoever.”

But the Crown Inn still has some work to do. With a grade of 62, it failed its inspection.

The three critical problems were bed bug infestation, fire extinguisher maintenance and some rooms needing evacuation plans.

But the health department says the Crown Inn is making headway. Wilkins said, “Very helpful, they voluntarily closed, they have worked with us. We've been there six to seven, eight times. We've talked to them many times by phone. We've provided information on bed bug infestations.”

Crown Inn has also removed the carpet, mattresses and furniture from 12 rooms. Wilkins said all 45 rooms must pass inspection before re-opening.

And the weekly rate motel also must pass East Ridge's city inspection.

The HRA will pay $1,650 per inspection to have the trained dogs scour the properties in an attempt to prevent future outbreaks like the one that began in October 2011 and was finally resolved three months and nearly $21,500 later. The tiny pests were found and treated in 12 apartments at Nokomis and one HRA-owned house, but are now believed to be eradicated.

“I think we have to stay on top of it,” said Ron Smidt, board chair, during the board’s Feb. 8 meeting. “We’ve got to continue on.”

The board approved biannual inspections by the dogs with the possibility of cutting back to yearly inspections if no bed bugs are found after three or four consecutive searches.

Tammy Manderscheid, HRA executive director, also told the board that she will be meeting with other HRAs from the region Feb. 16 and plans to acquire bed bug policies from those agencies to bring back to the board.

“Everybody is going to bring any policies or procedures they’ve put in place to start charging tenants (for bed bug treatment),” Manderscheid said.

She said the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which oversees the HRA, does not allow HRAs to hold tenants in apartment buildings financially responsible for bed bug treatment because it’s too difficult to tell which apartments the bugs originated in. Manderscheid said the HRA could create a policy that applies only to the agency’s scattered housing sites and might be able to obtain a waiver that would allow such a policy at Nokomis.

“I do think some housing authorities have asked for a waiver from HUD and have implemented charging tenants,” she said. “The particular lady I’m referring to says she’ll bring me all of her policies and papers that she submitted to HUD to get that waiver.”

During the March meeting, the board intends to review the information Manderscheid gathers and discuss the creation of a policy to hold residents accountable.

In other business:

-The HRA’s window committee — comprised of Manderscheid, Smidt and Fred Portz — planned to review information about the window replacement project planned for the Nokomis Apartments later this year before Manderscheid sends it out to architects to obtain bids. The board then plans to select a bid during its March 14 meeting. Preliminary estimates to replace 84 windows at the high rise are between $170,000 and $300,000.

-Manderscheid told the board she is working with a HUD field representative to develop a plan of action in case the HRA’s Section 8 funding from HUD remains at a level insufficient to support the 43 vouchers the agency currently funds.

In January, HUD reduced the HRA’s Section 8 funding to $8,239 a month for January, February and March, which will leave the agency with a shortfall of $4,617 each month and drain its Section 8 reserves by April. Manderscheid said they might be able to reduce the amount they provide for each Section 8 voucher or seek a waiver for emergency funds. But she added that there are no emergency funds available at this time.

Councilman T.J. Dow and the Department of Public Health will host meetings next week to give residents information they should know about bed bugs.

The meetings are open to the public and will all be held at 6 p.m. with these dates and locations.

Avoiding bedbugs

– Carefully inspect second-hand furniture, especially an upholstered or wood item, before bringing it home.
– Wash both new and second-hand clothing as soon as you bring it home. Dry on high heat.
– Keep purses and bags off floors in offices and theaters.

Identifying bedbugs

– Look for reddish lentil-sized bugs, reddish brown stains or droppings on mattresses or box springs, or small sticky white eggs.
-Watch for bites that become itchy welts.

– Buy mite-proof or bed bug-proof mattress covers for your mattresses and box springs. Bed bugs can stay dormant without a host for more than a year, so leave the covers on.
– Pick up clutter and vacuum often. Vacuum up a little talc or baking soda after each cleaning session to kill bugs in the bag or dust cup.
– Take clothes to the dry cleaners or wash clothing and bedding in hot water and dry on the dryer's highest heat setting.
– Put cloth items that aren't washable (like stuffed animals) in the dryer for 30 minutes on high heat.
